Candle Vessel Sealer: Why I Seal My Concrete Vessels
If you make concrete or gypsum candle vessels, you may have wondered if you really need to seal them.
Concrete, Hydrostone and gypsum can look completely solid, but they’re porous. Wax and fragrance oil can work their way into the material and sometimes show up as dark spots, staining or seepage on the outside of a finished candle.
After spending all that time making a beautiful vessel, that’s the last thing you want.
It’s also why I developed No Leak Sealer.
Why I Made No Leak Sealer
When I started making my own concrete vessels, I found lots of concrete sealers, but most were made for floors, patios and countertops — not candle vessels.
With my background in chemistry, I decided to work on something specifically for what I was making.
I wanted it to be water-based, low odour, clear when dry non toxic and, most importantly, simple to use.
How I Use It
Make sure your vessel is completely dry.
Pour enough No Leak Sealer into the vessel to coat the inside, slowly turning it so the bottom and walls are covered. Let it sit for about one minute, pour out the excess and turn the vessel upside down to drip for about five minutes.
Don’t wipe the inside.
For very porous materials, a second coat can be applied after about 30 minutes. Then allow the vessel to cure for 72 hours before pouring your wax.
No Leak Sealer can be used on concrete, cement, Hydrostone, gypsum and similar porous casting materials.
Because every maker’s mix is a little different, I always recommend testing it on your particular vessel first.
One Important Note
Sealing is only one part of making a candle vessel. It doesn’t replace proper candle testing.
No Leak Sealer was developed to help protect porous vessels from wax seepage, fragrance oil staining and surface discolouration. Your finished candle should still be tested with your specific vessel, wax, fragrance and wick combination.
